Narrative

William Grigg was one of sixteen people who were imported from England to Virginia by Thomas Liggon who received a grant of 800 acres of land for this service. This information comes from "Cavaliers and Pioneers" by Nell Nugent. The exact place William came from is not known, although it is thought to most likely be the southwestern parts of England, such as Cornwall, Devon or Dorset. The date he arrived is unknown, although it is certain he was in America living the life of a Virginia Colonist by 1663. William is thought to have married in 1664/1665 to Elizabeth Burwell, although it is not known for sure if this was her correct name. He was able to pay for his own transportation to America and did not work it out as an indentured servent. At some point he purchased 50 acres of land on the Appomattox River and was living there on the plantation he created as early as 1670. On February 10, 1677 William purchased an additional 156 acres of land on Baly's Creek from Robert Bolling "for 4,800 pounds of good sound, legal tobacco to be delivered to my new dwelling house upon the 10 day of October next in Charles City County, and 5,800 on October 10, 1679." This indicates William was already a planter growing tobacco on his Appomattox River Plantation. The Appomattox River plantation was eventually sold by William's son, William Grigg II to Lewis Green Sr. who is thought to be William II's brother-in-law. The 156 acres of land on Baly's Creek that William I bought with tobacco was the Grigg Plantation known as "The Graces" and remained in the Grigg family until his son, William Grigg II sold it on November 9, 1725.
It is thought that Susannah Roberts, a woman who was one of the head rights of Colonel Richard Lee, June 5, 1658 was William I's sister. She was born in 1643 and married Barthalamew Roberts. Their children were Barthalamew Roberts, born 1662, and William Roberts, born 1666.

This report includes eight generations. Later generations continue under the Diamond surname and can be seen in the Diamond report.
