Susanna Cathrina was born on June 2nd, 1821 in Graaff Reinet. Susanna Cathrina's father was Petrus Jacobus van Blerk and her mother is Maria Susanna Joubert. Her paternal grandparents were Jan Barend van Blerk and Maria Catharina van den Berg (van Blerk). She had two brothers and two sisters, named Jan Barend, Francois Petrus, Maria Catharina and Susanna Catharina Barendina. She had four half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Petrus Jacobus, Barend Johannes Vorster, Hendrik Stephanus, Jan Vorster, Anna Francina Johanna, Johanna Christina, Gertruida Christina, Hester Magdalena and Cecilia Magdelena.
