Nicholas Gerrit Alfred was born in 1863 in Kogelfontein, Simons Town. Nicholas Gerrit Alfred's father was Johannes Andries van Blerk and his mother was Johanna Maria Wessels (van Blerk). His paternal grandparents were Nicolaas van Blerk and Louisa Johanna Cats (van Blerk); his maternal grandparents were Wessel Johannes Wessels and Sara Margaretha Beseler (Wessels). He had eight brothers and two sisters, named Nicolaas Johannes, Adriaan Gerhardus, Fredrik Johannes, Jacobus Johannes, Jacobus David Gabriel, Johannes Andries, Samuel Johannes, Simon Petrus, Sarah Susana and Louisa Johanna Matilda Maria. He died at the age of 22 on September 6th, 1885 in Simonstown.-
