Her paternal grandparents were Nicolaas Johannes van Blerk and Elizabeth Johanna Stagman (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Michiel Hendrik Horak and Margaritha Maria Grobbelaar (Horak). She had four brothers and four sisters, named Nicolaas Johannes, Michael, Johannes Petrus Stegman, Bertie, Susan Margaret Sheppard, Lynn, Elizabeth Johanna and Helena Katharina.-
