Margaritha Magdalena was born on July 22nd, 1854 in Paarl. Margaritha Magdalena's father was Albertus Daniel Johannes van Blerk and her mother was Margaretha Magdalena Nieuwoudt (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Johannes Petrus van Blerk and Geertruida Elizabeth Louw (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Gerrit Nieuwoudt and Gertrude (Nieuwoudt). She had six brothers and four sisters, named Johannes Pretus Isaak, Gerrit Nieuwoudt, Albertus Daniel Johannes, Isaak Christiaan, Jacobus Johannes, Nicolaas Willem, Magdelena Johanna, Gertruida Elizabeth, Margaretha Berrendina and Aletta Hendrina Henrietta.
