Lavinia Jane was born in Kogelfontein, Simons Town. Lavinia Jane's father was Nicolaas Johannes van Blerk and her mother was Blanch Sophia White (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Johannes Andries van Blerk and Johanna Maria Wessels (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Thomas George White and Elizabeth Jane (White). She had two brothers named Robert George and Henry Lancaster. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Douglas John Harry, Nicolaas Gerrit Alfred and Helena Johanna Maria.-
