Johanna Paulina was born in 1898. Johanna Paulina's father was Johannes Paulus van Blerk and her mother was Anna Sophia Combrink (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Bastiaan Pieter Everhadus van Blerk and Anna Catharina Phillippina Soekoe (van Blerk). She had two brothers and four sisters, named Andries Christoffel, Willem Carl, Sophia Catharina Wilhelmina, Maria Elizabeth Magdalena, Anna Sophia and Andrietta Stoffelina.
