Jacomina Aletta was born on May 6th, 1820 in Cape Town. Jacomina Aletta's father was Jacobus Rogier van Blerk and her mother was Johanna Petronella van Niekerk (van Blerk).  Her paternal grandparents were Simon Petrus van Blerk and Anna Margaretha Bremicker (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Bernhardus Carolus van Niekerk and Johanna Hendrina Greyling (van Niekerk). She had three brothers and three sisters, named Simon Petrus, Jacobus Johannes, Johannes Barend Carlus, Anna Margaretha, Johanna Petronella and Martha Berendina.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
