Hester Maria was born on January 5th, 1909. Hester Maria's father was Jan Hendrik van Blerk and her mother was Elizabeth Johanna Pieterse (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Rogier Bernadus van Blerk and Hester Maria Viljoen (van Blerk). She had three brothers and three sisters, named Bernardus, James, Marthinus Samuel, Sarah Mary Ann, Irene Louisa and Judith. She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.-
