Geertruy Christina was born on March 31st, 1799 in Graaff Reinet. Geertruy Christina's father was Jan Barend van Blerk and her mother was Maria Catharina van den Berg (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Jan Barend van Blerk and Geertruy Swart (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Pieter van den Berg and Susanna Fouche (van den Berg). She had five brothers and five sisters, named Johannes Hendrick Barend, Petrus Jacobus, Hendrik Stephanus, Hendrik Stephanus, Casper Hendrik, Susanna Catharina Magdalena, Maria Catharina Elizabeth, Catharina Jacoba Petronella, Judith Elizabeth and Hester Magdalena.
