It seems that Nicolaas owned the land on which “Die Opstal” was built, but leased land that extended from Kalk Bay to Muizenberg from the government for farming. "Die Opstal" or "The Homestead" exists just below Boyes Drive and is bounded by Clairvaux Road, Lock and Anderson Streets. The address is 2 Anderson Street.

LND 1/264 L933 N.J. van Blerk’s application for renewal of lease of land at Kalk Bay 1887:- Nicolaas applied June 1887 for the renewal of the lease on land at ‘Kalk Bay and Muizenberg’. He had been paying rent of £5 per annum. Correspondence refers to the KB land as on the mountainside behind Kalk Bay. No mention of Muizenberg land location. Commissioner decided to extend lease at same terms and when it expired the land would be sold – see file  LND 1/311

LND L2591 N.J. van Blerk re application for two pieces of crown land at Kalk Bay 1888:- Application from Nicollas 11 Sept 1888 for purchase of 2 pieces of Crown Land at Kalk Bay (location unspecified). Recommended – and as there were no objections the land was granted 19 Feb 1889. Two pieces of land containing together 585 sq roods 113 sq ft sold for £20. It seems the land was bought by Nicolaas and a Willis.

Kleintuin or lot C had an area of 530 morgen and is an agricultural lot along the banks of the Silvermine River.  First transferred to J.A. Hurter on 16th March 1827, after which it was transferred to Nicolaas van Blerk and remained in the van Blerk family for many years. The farm was passed on from Nicolaas to his son Nicolaas Johannes van Blerk.  ‘The Homestead’ at Kleintuin is the oldest house in Clovelly and was built by the van Blerks in 1835 and it is possible that the ‘Die Opstal’ or ‘The Homestead’ at Kalk Bay was named after this house. It was proclaimed a National Monument in 17th August 1984 and can be found in Montrose Avenue, Clovelly.

The farm inventory (previously the opgraaf rol) 0f the early 1840’s recorded:-
Owner: Nicolaas van Blerk. One woman, four sons, two daughters, two Hottentot males over 16, two under 16, two Hottentot females under 16, two under 16, three male slaves over 16, two under 16, two female slaves over 20, two under 20, one riding horse, twenty oxen, twenty breeding cattle, six muids of oats sown.

The van Blerk family supplied vegetables, fruit, dairy products and poultry to the communities of Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town for many years.

ZILVERMYN (SILVERMINE) FARM    p47
In 1857 Nicolaas Johannes van Blerk bought the farm from the insolvent estate of Jan Greig de Villiers. The land lay along the upper banks of the Lower Silvermine River and bordered on Kleintuin. Size of the farm was 411 morgen.  The farm house that was originally built by William Ferdinand Kirsten in 1813 still stands today. The total size of the two farms would have been 941 morgen.

In 1824 a taxman visited the main five farms in the Silvermine river valley for the purpose of determining what taxes should be paid. The farms were Imhoffs Gift – Mr P. Lot C was 530 morgen in extent and was called Kleintuin, which today is Clovelly. The border was the river and it extended along the Kalk Bay road for about 200 yards and then up to the top of ‘Clovelly Kop’. This land was for farming and contained a number of cultivated fields.
In 1824 N.J. van Blerk had 1 riding horse, 20 oxen, 20 breeding cattle, 6 muicls of sown oats and paid a tax of 3 Pounds and 4 Pence.

The following undated cutting from the False Bay Echo was published about 2003. It is by Joy Coburn, the curator of the Fish Hoek Museum.

THE NOORDHOEK SALT PAN.
When farming began in the Noordhoek area in the 1700’s, the cattle soon discovered that the vlei, which dried up in the summer, provided a good salt lick. The early farmers probably used the salt for their own consumption, but it was not until about 1830 that the salt was harvested commercially. No one seemed to have had the expertise to turn it into a successful business and it changed hands several times until a Mr van Blerk of Kalk Bay, who was then the owner of Clovelly, bought the rights to work the pan.

With sufficient finance, and proper methods of collecting the salt, he raised the output from 65 bags a year to 6 000 bags a year, so he obviously had a good business operation. The salt was very pure and for many years was sent all over the country. Eventually, as more farming was taking place in the valley, cattle roaming in what was an unfenced area started damaging and fouling the pans. Not being dependent on the business for his income the owner lost interest and allowed the salt pan to return to its natural state.

The following piece of information was extracted from The Cape Odyssey. Vol 3. Issue 4 dated April/May 2003. Page 21. 3rd paragraph. Perhaps it refers to J P (Jan) van Blerk’s father. More likely, perhaps, his grandfather.

NOORDHOEK.
There was a saltpan nearby that was the source of considerable activity. A traveller inspected the enterprise and had this to say, early in 20th century. “I did look around and saw how the salt was gathered but only once a year. From information given me by the most reliable authority, I found the saltpan and land is some 132 acres in extent and was first worked about 70 or 80 years ago (about 1830—1840) on a very small scale. The old method was to wait until the rain water was evaporated and the salt laid in sight once a year only. I found Mr van Blerk of Kalk Bay, had worked it for many years and one year his output grew from 65 bags to 6 500 bags. It was a matter of taking care to prevent cattle wandering over the pan and not allowing sand to be washed down from the hills so that the salt could scarcely come through the sand and dirt on the surface of the pan.” The visitor was most enthusiastic about the future of the saltpan and declared that it was better than any diamond or gold mine in the Orange River Colony and the Transvaal.

Maria Magdalena van  Blerk estranged wife of NJ van Blerk brought matter to court 5/2/1907 so that she could continue to receive interest in terms of the will of the late Abraham Auret. She and NJ van Blerk had been separated for 16 years by mutual agreement during which time she had had no support and had maintained the children. NJ van Blerk, who had been living with Mollie Fleur in Kenilworth, had by now had a stroke but was saying he would provide a home for the family if he could share the estate interest. He had a legal entitlement in terms of the law but this had been previously overruled. Maria Magdalena van  Blerk filed for divorce. Statement from Antoinetta Smit of Kenilworth made to John Smit said she knew NJ van Blerk well as she had rented Mollie Fleur a room in 1894.
1865 - 1926 Johannes Petrus Stegman van Blerk 61 61 "Jan"
Lived in Kalk Bay towards Clovelly in area known as "Die Trappies" in house named "The Clouds Rest" - address is now 232 Main Road. Most of children born here.
Records show that J,P.S. van Blerk was a member of the Village Management Board when it was formed in 1891 and he was elected among the first councilors when the Municipality was formed in 1895.
For a while he was engaged in transport riding between the diamond fields at Kimberley, where the railway ended, and Mafikeng. It was during this venture that he and Dawie Hendrickse, also engaged in transport riding, are said to have made their fortunes, in which dabbling in diamonds may have played a part, which enabled them to purchase large farms at Lakeside. He operated mule wagons and it was said to be during this time that an injury caused his left arm to be amputated above the elbow.
His vegetable and dairy farm at Lakeside extended from the Steenberg mountain right down to the lake and on the main road he built a number of stone cottages, since demolished, which he rented out. He also established a grocery shop, dairy, butchery, a blacksmith shop and a bakery. Most of these premises were on the lower (lake) side of Main Road. Vegetable crops and cattlefeed were grown on the wetlands. Bread and milk and other farm products were delivered by horse-drawn wagons and carts.


1886 - 1957 Jan Willem van Blerk 71 71 1870 - 1932 Nicolaas Johannes van Blerk 62 62 His Kalk Bay property had dam which supplied water to steam trains and wash-houses.  Their house was apparenty called "Colvan House", up in Belmont Road (Kalk Bay area).  - The last house on the left at the T-junction.

Passed on an old bible with family notes through generations and is now with N.J. vn Blerk (Nico) - Mari Britz's husband.
He gave the bible to his wife as a wedding present. (16/2/1897)

1928:- Council were buying up strips of land for road widening. This file relates to NJvB’s property on the site of the present Belmont Court. See plan. Paid him £80 for approx 320sq ft. NJvB’s diagram showing the section of property to be bought drawn by Fred Cherry. From the Cherry drawing it can be seen that the building fronting on to Main Rd had a stoep with 2 sets of stairs down to the footway on Main Rd [This building demolished and replaced by Belmont Court]

3/CT 4/1/3/337 B919 Proposed flats, garage, bank and balcony over footway 1928:- File granting approval for plans for erection of building cnr Main and Belmont Rds April 1928 for NJvB of ‘Colvan’ Belmont Rd. This new building was to be garage and repair shop and Bank on ground floor with 3 flats above. Permission to demolish existing building given – this was 2 shops with 2 rooms and kitchens at rear. Not used for domestic purposes for 5 years [This is Belmont Court probably designed by well known architect Fred Cherry]

“Other fine swimmers who brought much honour and glory to Kalk Bay were Ruby Anderson, who died young; Helen and “Kata” van Blerk – whose family had been in Kalk Bay so long that their ancestors had owned the farm Klein Tuin (now Clovelly) as well as the area over the neck into Kalk Bay. Mr van Blerk, senior, who had married a Miss Colyn, had owned the property stretching up the mountainside behind the station which included the natural mountain spring.
This incorporated the water rights, and, until recently, Mr Leslie van Blerk was the proud possessor of the original key which his father used to unlock the tanks when the steam engines, which turned at Kalk Bay in those last years of the nineteenth century, were in need of filling before their return to Cape Town. “

The files cover the liquidation of this company between 1905 and 1906. It was started by Lambertus Johannes Colyn later joined by Nicolaas Johannes van Blerk, Adolph Hersch and Carl Herman Edward Teichert. Colyn was believed to also have shares in the Mayville Syndicate – Kalk Bay?

There was apparently a quarry and brick and tile making plant situate at Colyn’s Siding Kalk Bay. The land was described as Portion 20 of Lot C – 11 morgen 240 sq roods. Sold to Cape Govt Railways for £650

There were in addition tile and brick making machines and a steam engine all housed in a galvinsed iron building. The machines were fixed to the concrete foundations and were found to be under water when the liquidators sent an engineer to have a look.

Van Blerk paid £150 to the liquidators and was released from proceedings.
There at least 2 apparently Italians employed Nicola Nicora and Agostino Nicora of Kalk Bay

1856 - 1946 Josephine Marie Bearnize van Hoogenhout (van Blerk) 90 90 Second wife, married in 1907.
Lived in Stone cottage on lower side of Main Road, Lakeside. Known as "Munna".
After husbands death she assisted friends with buying property and money was never recovered. After approx. 1 year she lost all the property to Wolfsohn brothers for over R1000 000. Money was invested through a lawyer who embezzled it all - she died poor. The lawyer was given a five year sentence - the Wolfsohn family became very wealthy - the sons became doctors - Recently, a member of the family - a dentist - commited suicide.
