Philip Jan Hendrik's father was Adriaan Carel Steensma and his mother was Rosina Johanna Hendrina van Blerk (Steensma). His maternal grandparents were Rogier Bernhadus van Blerk and Martha Basina Dorothea van de Kaap. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Jan Willem, Carel Rosier Bernardus, Philip Christiaan, Rozier Bernardus, Aletta Geertruyda Willemina, Rosina Johanna Hendrina, Johanna Hendrina, Magdalena Christina and Wilhelmina Rosina.-
