Jan Willem was born on January 24th, 1852 in Cape of Good Hope. Jan Willem's father was Adriaan Carel Steensma and his mother was Rosina Johanna Hendrina van Blerk (Steensma). His maternal grandparents were Rogier Bernhadus van Blerk and Martha Basina Dorothea van de Kaap. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Carel Rosier Bernardus, Philip Christiaan, Philip Jan Hendrik, Rozier Bernardus, Aletta Geertruyda Willemina, Rosina Johanna Hendrina, Johanna Hendrina, Magdalena Christina and Wilhelmina Rosina.General Notes
