Jan was born on November 6th, 1682 in Miskolezy, Česká Skalice.  Jan's father was Fridrich Mojžíš and his mother was Marie Vondrová.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Mojžíš and Maruša??. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Martin, Josef, Fridrich, Dorota, Anna, Rozina and Ludmila.  He was the second oldest of the eight children. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender, named Václav, Jan, Ludmila, Ludmila, Zuzana and Dorota.
