Esperanza Rodríguez

Esperanza was born in 1572. Esperanza's father is Francisco Rodríguez and her mother is Isabel (Guinean slave). Her paternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. She had two half-brothers named Tomás and Pedro. She died at the age of 74 in 1646.

General Notes
- She was described as a mulata--a black woman married to a German man, who was a sculptor and ensemblador. Pretended to be crazy, eating her own lice, making a doll out of her own clothes and trying to breastfeed it. Refused to give up other Judaizers. Catalina Enriquez was her former owner, but was freed and converted by Enriquez in Mexico. Her mother was an "esclava guineota." Her father was a slave tradre, and possibly Catalina was her own aunt. It is important to recognize that she and her daughters were accepted by the crypto-Jewish community in New Spain, as her "mulata blanca" daughters married within the network.
