Juan Duarte (alias Duarte Fernandez)

Juan was born in 1612 in Zabugal. He died at the age of 37 in 1649.

General Notes
- p. 107-8. Born in Zabugal, Portugal. Profession described as "inland trader". Second cousin of Tomas Nunez de Peralta, reconciled in 1646. "As he was not known as a Jew, as he had been known in Spain, he changed his name here and assumed the name Duarte Fernandez. He was completely unattached to the 3 Jewish groups in Mexico. Refused to "tell the truth" for over six years. HE and Tomas Nunez de Peralta ran away from the Inquisition, and were "apprehended in a desolate place near the city of Our Lady of Zacatecas, eighty leagues from this city." p. 108.
