Obituary: Arthur F. Spinney Jr. of Saugus, a member of the Boston College Hall of Fame who played with two NFL championship teams with the Baltimore Colts, died of a heart attack Friday at Union Hospital in Lynn. He was 66.
Mr. Spinney was a public relations official for the Massachusetts Port Authority from 1974 until his death. Born in Saugus, he graduated from Saugus High School in 1945 and from Boston College in 1950. Mr. Spinney, who played end for Boston College, switched to left guard with the Colts and played nine years in Baltimore through 1960. The Colts were NFL champions in 1958 and 1959.
He left the team to serve in the Army during the Korean War.
Following his playing career, Mr. Spinney was offensive line coach with the Boston Patriots for several years. He was a member of the NFL Alumni Association and the Saugus High School Hall of Fame.
Mr. Spinney is survived by his widow, Mary G. (Pappas) Spinney; five sons, Stephen A. of Naperville, Ill., John D. of Newburyport, Craig L. of Norwalk, Conn. and Michael A. and Neal E., both of Saugus; a daughter, Laura E. Epperly of Mahwah, N.J.; three sisters, Margaret Ellison of New Hampshire, Jean Bedrosian of Wenham and Evelyn Bangs of Saugus; and 12 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, Saugus.
Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Saugus.
