John was born on November 7th, 1784 in Barrington, Nova Scotia.  John's father was John Spinney and his mother was Susan Snow.  His maternal grandparents are Nathan Snow and Mary Polly. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, William, Sarah, Mary, Susan, Elizabeth and Deborah.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 94 on March 21st, 1879 in Barrington, Nova Scotia.
