    Donald N. Spinney of Lynn, a carpenter, died Saturday at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 71.
    Born in Peabody, he graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1949 and later attended the University of Tokyo, Japan, Clemson University and North Shore Community College. He had been a Lynn resident for most of his life.
    Mr. Spinney served in the Air Force as a sergeant in charge of all teenage activity at Johnson Air Force Base in Japan during the Korean War. Later in life, he also served for 10 years in the U.S. Selective Service.
    He worked as a carpenter for Cutler Associates Inc. in
    Worcester for 10 years, retiring in 1989. He had worked previously at Fulton & Sons in Marblehead for 25 years.
    Mr. Spinney was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational, where he had served as a deacon for 10 years and was superintendent of the Sunday school for 16 years.
    He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America from the age of 11, was an Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm of the Far East Council in Japan and served with Scout Troop 28 at St. Mary's Church in Lynn. While serving as scout master in Japan, he received the Order of the Arrow and later earned the Silver Beaver Award and the George Martin Award. He was a member of the first Shu-Shu-Ga Course.
    Mr. Spinney was a former member of the Norfolk Correctional Institute Fellowship, was a past president of the Cobbet Junior High School PTA and was past commander of the Franco America Amvets Post 161 in Lynn.
    He was an active member of the Masons Golden Fleece Lodge AF & AM, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Boston, the New England Genealogical Society, the Professional Musicians Club and AARP. He enjoyed listening to county music and tracing genealogy.
    Mr. Spinney is survived by his wife, Frances S.J. (Patton); two sons, Donald S. and Daniel N., both of Amesbury; two daughters, Susan R. Snow and Alyson M., both of Lynn; a brother, Bruce A. of Jupiter, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Church of Christ Congregational, Lynn.
    Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
