George Hammond

  • When Hannah (Coburn) Hammond died, she left six children, thirteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. By his father's will, dated August 1, 1751, George inherited a part of his father's lands, (Maine Wills 1640-1760, pp. 691-6) on which he lived his entire life. This farm descended from him to his grandson, John, who in turn left it to his son, George A. Hammond, who died there recently. The house which he first built on this farm was burned in 1799.
    Hannah, his wife, inherited from her father, Ebenezer Coburn, some personal property and household furniture. Will dated Dec. 26, 1749. (Maine Wills 1640-1760, p. 620.) He was the father of a natural daughter, Dorcas Hammond, b. Jan. 12, 1723, by Lydia Spinney. She m. Michael Kennard, and was the mother of five children. He was in the First Company of Kittery Militia in the French War March 15, 1757, under command of Capt. John Frost. He was ensighn of the Company. (Mass. Arch. Muster Rolls, Vol. 95, p. 375.)
