Martha was born on December 14th, 1835 in Montpelier, Vermont.  Martha's father was Jeremiah Dow and her mother was Parnel E. Phelps. She had six brothers and three sisters, named David, Elisha, Jeremiah, William, Lorenzo, Lewis, Betsey, Clementine and Loretta.
