Herbert was born on September 22nd, 1845 in Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1   Herbert's father was Albert Sawyer Carleton and his mother was Maria Blain Newman.  His paternal grandparents were Moses Carleton and Mary Sawyer; his maternal grandparents were William H. Newman and Mary Nichols. He had four brothers and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Eugene, Clarence, Charles, Jesse, Susan, Jennie and Carleton. He had an adopted sister named Mary.
