Bertha was born on April 7th, 1814 in Barrington, Nova Scotia.  Bertha's father was Joseph Atwood and her mother was Deborah Spinney.  Her maternal grandparents were John Spinney and Susan Snow. She had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Joseph, Isaac, Sarah and Deborah.  She was the second oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 6 on July 27th, 1820.
