General Notes
James was the fifth Great Steward of Scotland and in 1286 was chos en as one of six Regents of Scotland. He supported the claims of the old er Robert Bruce (against John Baliol) for the throne of Scotland. James op posed King Edward I's attempts to dominate Scotland and ratified the trea ty with France in 1295. He was forced to submit fealty to Edward I (along with many others) in 1297. He was sent by the English to negotiate with William Wallace, the rebel noble, but joined Wallace instead. James fou ght for Wallace against the English at Stirling Bridge in 1297. He supported King Robert Bruce and attended Bruce's Parliament at St. Andrews.
