Southerland was born on August 4th, 1821 in Aylsford, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada.  Southerland's father is Alexander MC KENZIE and his mother is Elizabeth. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, William, John, Whitman, Barbary, Rachel and Susan Ann.  He died at the age of 89 in 1910 in Morristown, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
