Jaan was born in August 1843 in Arula, Laane.  Jaan's father was Juhan Volmer and his mother was Liis Volmer (Kikkas).  His paternal grandparents were Peeter Volmer and Tiiu Volmer; his maternal grandparents were Märt and Mai Kikkas. He had a brother and four sisters, named Ado, Mari, Eva, Leenu and Liis.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 29 in March 1873.
