Mihkel was born in 1834.  Mihkel's father was Hans Saarva and his mother was Mai Saarva (Koljaku).  His maternal grandparents were Rein Koljak and Krõõt Koljak. He had two brothers and a sister, named Juhan, Jakob and Eva.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
