Mai was born in 1766. Mai's father was Tõnn and her mother was Kai. Her paternal grandparents were Peeter and Mai; her maternal grandparents were Mats and Mai. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Juhan, Rein, Liis and Eva. She was the oldest of the five children.
