Liis was born in 1772. Liis' father was Hans and her mother was Mai. Her paternal grandparents were Mats and Mai; her maternal grandparents were Hindrik and Ann. She had three brothers and a sister, named Jaan, Jüri, Juhan and Mari. She was the second oldest of the five children.
