Karl was born in 1808. Karl's father was Ado and his mother was Mari Susi. His paternal grandparents were Juhan and Mai; his maternal grandparents were Hans and Margret. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Ado, Hindrik, Jaan, Margret and Ann. He was the third oldest of the six children.
