Jaan was born in 1822. Jaan's father was Ado and his mother was Mari Susi. His paternal grandparents were Juhan and Mai; his maternal grandparents were Hans and Margret. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Karl, Ado, Hindrik, Margret and Ann. He was the youngest of the six children.
