Epp was born in 1774. Epp's father was Mäe-Äidu Jaan and her mother was Liis. Her paternal grandparents were Hindrik and Ann; her maternal grandparents were Jüri and Liis. She had three sisters named Mari, Ann and Liis. She was the second oldest of the four children.
