So, 2 CONC Reine was no doubt named for the celebration of Epiphany (visit of the 2 CONC Kings to the Infant Jesus). 2 CONT 2 CONT She married Joseph Lamere (Lemaire, Lamer) at age 15. After the disas 2 CONC trous flood of 1826, they left Red River for the United States. 2 CONT 2 CONT Joseph and Reine went to his old home in Sorel, PQ where they lived un 2 CONC til he died in 1858. In 1876 Reine returned to 2 CONC Red River (St. Boniface), one year after her mother, Marie Anne Gabou 2 CONC ry, died. Reine died in St. Boniface at the age of 86. 2 CONT 2 CONT There seems to be a mystery regarding dates, marriages, and births, ie 2 CONC Reine Lagimodiere and Michel Monet, Marie-Anne Monet, Reine's marriag 2 CONC e to Joseph Lamere (sr.), the date of Catherine Lamere's birth. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT The following is a translation from "Le Mystere de Marie-Anne Monet" f 2 CONC rom Centre du Patrimoine in St-Boniface (Winnipeg), Manitoba, Canada. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT The Mystery of Marie 2 CONC -Anne Monet 2 CONT 2 CONT Genealogical research sometimes raises questions which are difficult, 2 CONC if not impossible to solve. Such is the case for Marie-Anne Monet, wi 2 CONC fe of Prosper Ducharme. 2 CONT 2 CONT The only official document that we find that gives the name of her two 2 CONC parents is an affidavit for the script1 to which she affixed her mark 2 CONC on July 3, 1875. Marie-Anne (and Marianne in the text) declared that 2 CONC she was the wife of Prosper Ducharme, resident at Sainte-Agathe (Mani 2 CONC toba). She was born in 1832 in Saint-Boniface (Manitoba), girl of Mic 2 CONC hel Bellehumeur, a Metis, and LaReine Lagimodière, French Canadian. Th 2 CONC e document, compiled in English, was explained to her in French and sh 2 CONC e affixed her cross in front of a witness at Saint-Boniface. On the ot 2 CONC her hand, three censuses: 1870, 1881, 1891, say she was 49, 59, and 68 2 CONC years old respectively and thus born about 1821 or 1822. The censuses 2 CONC are often more faithful to reflect the ages than the affidavits becau 2 CONC se, in many cases, when we have the proof of a baptism, we note that t 2 CONC hese affidavits are erroneous by one or even several years. This could 2 CONC be explained by the fact that the people giving the information did n 2 CONC ot speak English and that the representatives of the government who to 2 CONC ok information were often unilingual English-speaking. 2 CONT 2 CONT However, here are the problems which the affidavit for the scrip signe 2 CONC d by Marie-Anne Monet poses. We find Marie Monet mentioned her parents 2 CONC , Michel Monet dit Bellehumeur and Reine Lagimodière, characters in th 2 CONC e history of the River-Red, but they were not a married unit. 2 CONT 2 CONT The registers of the parish of Saint-Boniface would undoubtedly have t 2 CONC hrown light on this, but the majority of those, going back to 1818, we 2 CONC re lost in a fire which destroyed the cathedral and the presbytery in 2 CONC December 1860. 2 CONT 2 CONT Let us examine, to start, who could have been this Michel Bellehumeur. 2 CONC The probable candidate would be Michel Monet dit Bellehumeur (and Bel 2 CONC humeur), son of Michel Monet dit Bellehumeur, a French Canadian, and o 2 CONC f Marguerite Grant, Metis. Born in August 1802 in the West, he was bap 2 CONC tized on September 7 at Berthierville (Quebec). One finds him in the W 2 CONC est in 1822, the year of the birth of a son, Michel. He married Jos 2 CONC èphte of the nation of Sauteux on February 5, 1839 in Saint-François-X 2 CONC avier (Manitoba). He would be deceased before 1875, but Marie-Anne sai 2 CONC d in her affidavit that Michel " was my father ". The Monets were in 2 CONC the area of Saint-Boniface from the very start of the 19th century, bu 2 CONC t Michel (father) sign, in 1817, the request requiring of missionnaire 2 CONC s for the River-Red. Also, in his biography of Marie-Anne Lagimodière 2 CONC (born Gaboury)2, the Dugas abbot says that, in 1816, there was at the 2 CONC place where later the Gray Sisters were going to build their convent, 2 CONC a hut out of wooden built by an old Canadian of the name of Bellehumeu 2 CONC r (undoubtedly Michel Monet dit Bellehumeur). in October 1816, the hou 2 CONC se not being occupied, Mrs Lagimodière sought refuge with her children 2 CONC while waiting for the return of her husband. 2 CONT 2 CONT Let us examine now which could have been this "LaReine Lagimodière". 2 CONC It seems rather clear that there is only one candidate: Reine Lagimod 2 CONC ière , the first white child to be born in the area, girl of Jean-Bapt 2 CONC iste Lagimodière (and Lagimonière) and of Marie-Anne Gaboury, the firs 2 CONC t European-Canadian to be established permanently in the Canadian West 2 CONC . Reine Lagimodière, born on January 6, 1807. It was the day of Epipha 2 CONC ny, commemorating the visit of the Kings to the Infant Jesus. This bei 2 CONC ng customarily the third important feast of the Christmas season in Qu 2 CONC ebec, devout Marie Anne looked for an appropriate name. Since the baby 2 CONC was a girl she called her "Reine" (Queen). 2 CONT According to a document found in the provincial files of Colombia-Brit 2 CONC anique3, Joseph Lamère married Reine Lagimodiére in 1823 in Saint-Boni 2 CONC face. Part of the registers of the parish of Saint-Boniface for the ye 2 CONC ars 1825 to 1834 were saved from the fire of 1860. When we compare the 2 CONC marriages of the above mentioned document with the register, they agr 2 CONC ee perfectly for the years. There is thus no doubt as for the year of 2 CONC the marriage of Joseph Lamère and Reine Lagimodière. Certain sources4 2 CONC indicate that elder couple Lamère-Lagimodière, Catherine, would have 2 CONC been born in November, 1822. The censuses and her death certificate le 2 CONC ad us to believe however, that 2 CONT she would have been born rather between 1823 and 18265. According to 2 CONC the family tradition, the Lamère couple and their children would have 2 CONC left the River-Red after the flood of 1826 which devastated the colony 2 CONC . Thereafter one finds the family in the area of Sorel and Saint-Davi 2 CONC d d' Yamaska in Quebec. Become widowed, Reine would be established dur 2 CONC ing a few years with her daughter and her grandchildren in the United 2 CONC States. It is on June 24, 18766 which Reine and the members of her fam 2 CONC ily leave Woonsocket (Rhode Island) to return to Manitoba where she sp 2 CONC ent her last years. She died on May 27, 1893, and was buried two days 2 CONC later in the cemetery of Saint-Boniface. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1870, the Ducharme-Monet couple remained in Saint-Vital. Since 187 2 CONC 67 they were in the area of 2 CONT Saint-Jean-Baptiste with River-with-Plums. After the death of Prosper 2 CONC which occurred on August 4, 18878 Marie-Anne would remain with her d 2 CONC aughter, Marie-Rose, and her son-in-law, Mathias Jacques9. This famil 2 CONC y left the area between 1892 and 1900, we do not find any trace with t 2 CONC he census of 1901. The death certificate and burial of Marie-Anne rema 2 CONC in untraceable. 2 CONT 2 CONT Would Marie-Anne Monet be the natural daughter of Reine Lagimodière an 2 CONC d Michel Monet, described above? The indices let suspect that it is ve 2 CONC ry possible. It is interesting to note that she carried the same first 2 CONC name as the mother of Reine Lagimodière, Marie Anne Gaboury! Marie-A 2 CONC nne Ducharme, born Monet, affirmed in her affidavit that she was born 2 CONC in Saint-Boniface, that her father was Métis and her mother a Canadian 2 CONC -Frenchwoman. The two only people who fill all these criteria are abov 2 CONC e mentioned Michel Monet and Reine Lagimodière. Reine Lagimodière cou 2 CONC ld, before her marriage with Joseph Lamère, have had a girl, Marie-An 2 CONC ne, with Michel Monet. But of the questions are posed. Who would have 2 CONC raised Marie-Anne? With the Lamère family in 1826, or would she have r 2 CONC emained in the area of the River Red? On the dates, the answers remai 2 CONC n untraceable. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Children of Marie-Anne Monet and Prosper Ducharme 2 CONC 2 CONT 2 CONT 1.Sara Ducharme, born on January 12, 1850 in Saint-Boniface (Manito 2 CONC ba)10. The marriage took place in St. Charles B 2 CONC oromeo parish August 26, 1872. 2 CONT 2 CONT St. Pierre Register:His baptism reads as follows: 2 CONT 136 ieme bapteme: Jean-Baptiste Joyal, Paroisse St. Pierre, Sorel. Gale winds 2 CONT destroyed the new church, February 2, 1876. It was rebuilt in 1881 by 2 CONT Father Dauray, first pastor. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Jean-Baptiste and his wife traveled to Pawtucket, R.I. on March 20, 18 2 CONC 73 and to Milford, Mass. on May 11, 1874. Although it is unclear as t 2 CONC o why they travelled to Milford, there may be one of several reasons, 2 CONC or a combination of reasons for the visit. Aside from the simple expl 2 CONC anation that they may have gone for a visit to friends, we need to und 2 CONC erstand what was going on for French-Canadians at this time. In New En 2 CONC gland, French-Canadians were generally looked down upon by Americans. 2 CONC Around the same time as the Milford visit some French-Canadians, like 2 CONC Father Albert Lacombe, were visiting the "Little Canadas" of New Engl 2 CONC and impressing upon French speaking people that there was a need for F 2 CONC rench settlers in western Canada in order to keep pace with English se 2 CONC ttlers from Ontario. There was a fear that the French would lose thei 2 CONC r way of life. In 1874, Louis Riel visited New England (Worcester, M 2 CONC ass.) inviting his French-Canadian audiences to emigrate to the North- 2 CONC West (western Canada.) Perhaps the Joyals' visit to Milford was a pre 2 CONC paration for their move in 1876. It should be noted that Reine (Lagim 2 CONC odiere) Lamere moved back to Manitoba at the same time. Her mother Ma 2 CONC rie-Anne had died in 1875, so perhaps everyone met at Milford to discu 2 CONC ss plans of returning to Manitoba and resume relations with their kin. 2 CONC 2 CONT 2 CONT Jean-Baptiste's oldest child, George was baptized April 7, 1874 at Pre 2 CONC cious Blood parish in Woonsocket. His first job in Manitoba was Constable for Selkirk, August 26, 187 2 CONC 8. His fourth son, Jean- 2 CONC Baptiste, Jr. was born at St. Boniface on November 18, 1881. The fami 2 CONC ly returned to St. Boniface, February 26, 1884.
