József's father was Gergely Magyari Kossa and his mother was Erzsébet Molnár.  His paternal grandfather was Gergely Kossa. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Mihály, István, István, Lídia, Zsófia and Julianna.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 66 on September 25th, 1847.
