Mária's father was József Körtvelesi and her mother was Julianna Szabó.  Her paternal grandparents were János Körtvélyesi and Judit Szalai. She had four brothers and three sisters, named István, József, András, Benjamin, Erzsébet, Julianna and Lidia.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
