Karolina's father was István Körtvélyesi and her mother was Erzsébet Házy.  Her paternal grandparents were István Körtvélyesi and Mária Horváth. She had a brother and five sisters, named György, Mária, Piroska, Julianna, Julianna and Rozália.  She was the second oldest of the seven children. She had three half-brothers named János, István and György.
