Alma was born on July 1st, 1915.  Alma's father was Johann Christian Sander and her mother was Caroline Becker.  Her paternal grandparents were Christian Heinrich Abraham Sander and Catharina Lemmertz; her maternal grandparents were Georg Becker and Phillipine Müller. She had seven brothers and eight sisters, named Christian, Julius, Balduino, Oscar, Walter, Benno, Artur, Elma, Frieda, Hilda, Olivia, Elsa, Amélia, Wilma and Emma.  She is the thirteenth oldest of the sixteen children.
