    John was a man of great wealth and position, who was appointed Justi ce of England, and at the coronation of King John, June 26, 1199, was gi rt with the sword, as Earl of Essex, and then served at the King's table ). John Fitz-Goeffrey, on the death of his half-brother William in 1227, p aid a fine to the King of 300 marks for those lands which were his father 's and did by inheritance rightly belong to him, and whereof this last Ea rl William died seized. In the 18th of Henry III, this John was constitut ed Sheriff of Yorkshire, and in the same reign was admitted one of the Pri vy Council, and the same year was one of those sent to the Pope to prohib it his attempting anything therein prejudicial to the interests of the Ki ng and kingdom. In eight years afterwards John Fitz-Goeffrey was one of t he commissioners sent from King Henry III, with Roger Bigod and other s, to the Council at Lyons, in order to complain of the great exactions ma de upon the realm by the Holy See; the next year he was constituted Justi ce of Ireland, where for his services he received a grant from the cro wn of the Isles of Thomond.
