Janet was born in 1853.  Janet's father was Donald Polson and her mother was Barbara  MacLeod.  Her paternal grandparents were Alexander  Polson and Catherine  Matheson; her maternal grandparents were George MacLeod and Janet Bannerman. She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Alexander, George, Peter, William, Isobel and Barbara.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
