William was born in 1852.  William's father was Alexander MacLeod and his mother was Ellen Davidson.  His paternal grandparents were George MacLeod and Janet Bannerman. He had four brothers and a sister, named John, George, Donald, Alexander and Isabella.  He was the oldest of the six children.
