John was born on November 26th, 1856.  John's father was Alexander MacLeod and his mother was Ellen Davidson.  His paternal grandparents were George MacLeod and Janet Bannerman. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, George, Donald, Alexander and Isabella.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
