William was born in 1821 in Morton, Bingley, Yorkshire, England.1   William's father was Unknown Thornton and his mother was Mary (Thornton).  He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Sarah, Polman and Grace.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 54 in 1875 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.
