Martha Jane was born in 1830 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.1   Martha Jane's father was Richard Thornton and her mother was Elizabeth (Thornton).  She had four brothers and five sisters, named Henry, George, Hastwell W, Richard, Mary, Anna E, Catherine, Helen and Octavia.  She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
