James Petty

James was born in 1834 in Hensall, Yorkshire, England.¹ James' father was John Petty and his mother was Elizabeth Hirst. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Pettyt and Anne (Nancy) Benson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John William, Henry, George, William, Elizabeth Phoebe, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Eleanor. He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
