Ellen was born in 1834 in Salterforth, Yorkshire, England.1   Ellen's father was Richard Petty and her mother was Martha (Petty).  She had four brothers and five sisters, named Richard, John, Sutcliffe Nelson, Joseph, Martha, Mercy, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth.  She was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
