Joseph was born in 1857.  Joseph's father was Samuel Laurence Walker and his mother was Mary Coull.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Walker and Mary Cobb; his maternal grandparents were Joesph Coull and Isabella Moffat?. He had four sisters named Margret, Isabella, Jane and Mary .  He was the third oldest of the five children.
