Thomas was born in 1890 in Queensbury?.  Thomas' father was John Maitland Murray and his mother was Elizabeth Mathieson Murray.  His paternal grandparents were James Murray and Jessie Maitland; his maternal grandparents were James Bisset Murray and Charlotte Rae. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Alex, Jessie, Bella and Charlotte.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
