John was born in 1889 in Old Machar Aberdeen.  John's father was John Maitland Murray and his mother was Elizabeth Mathieson Murray.  His paternal grandparents were James Murray and Jessie Maitland; his maternal grandparents were James Bisset Murray and Charlotte Rae. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, Alex, Jessie, Bella and Charlotte.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
