James was born in 1882 in Newhills Parish Aberdeen.  James' father was John Maitland Murray and his mother was Elizabeth Mathieson Murray.  His paternal grandparents were James Murray and Jessie Maitland; his maternal grandparents were James Bisset Murray and Charlotte Rae. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Alex, Jessie, Bella and Charlotte.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
