Bella was born in 1885 in Newhills Parish Aberdeen.  Bella's father was John Maitland Murray and her mother was Elizabeth Mathieson Murray.  Her paternal grandparents were James Murray and Jessie Maitland; her maternal grandparents were James Bisset Murray and Charlotte Rae. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Thomas, Alex, Jessie and Charlotte.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
